Turkey needs new areas in which to expand its economy and find new horizons in our foreign policy in a globalizing world. As for Davutoğlu’s activism on the Syrian issue, if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stays in power for a while longer, it will close one of our windows to the Middle East and also present a big threat to our security. And what if Assad leaves power? Davutoğlu once said: “The processes of foreign policies should not be evaluated only by taking a snapshot of a moment in time; they should be evaluated considering all of the causes and outcomes.” The extent of Davutoğlu’s activism regarding the Syrian issue can be criticized, but the probability of finally winning this diplomatic gamble should not be underestimated, either.
