Turkey’s Kardeş Türküler set for Amsterdam concert

3 July 2012 /TODAY’S ZAMAN
Turkey’s well-known Anatolian folk ensemble Kardeş Türküler is headed for Amsterdam this weekend for a live performance as part of the Dutch city’s international Roots Festival. Kardeş Türküler will take to the stage Sunday evening at Amsterdam’s Oosterpark as part of the four-day festival’s free-admission closing section, Alliantie Roots Open Air.

The İstanbul-based Kardeş Türküler, famed for its diverse repertoire made up of ethnic folk songs in various languages spoken in and around Anatolia, will be joined by the Dutch-based jazz fusion quartet Arifa and Turkish jazz and blues pianist Karsu Dönmez on the Alliantie Roots Open Air program.

The performances are part of a wide-ranging series of cultural events in the Netherlands and Turkey marking the 400th anniversary of the commencement of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Running this year from July 5-8 in several indoor and outdoor venues in Amsterdam, such as the famous Paradiso club and the Bimhuis concert hall, the Roots Festival presents a diverse range of music from around the world every year, attracting more than 50,000 festivalgoers annually. The main theme for this year’s festival is “Tracks,” highlighting the role of cultural history and tradition in inspiration.
