Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Leyla Zana, an independent pro-Kurdish deputy from Diyarbakır, are expected to meet on Saturday to discuss the Kurdish issue, the Prime Ministry sources said.

Earlier this month, Zana said she believes Erdoğan can solve the Kurdish issue and that she has never lost hope in him. Her statements elicited some harsh criticism from the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP).

Zana said she does not think the Kurdish issue will be solved by appointing the military, police or judiciary with certain tasks, stating: “There is a solid fact here. Let's say this openly and accept this fact. If he wanted, the strongest can solve this issue. Who is that strongest one? It's the government and its head, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The person who is the head of the strongest government in [our] history is able to show the willpower and have the strength to sort out this issue. I believe that he will be able to solve this issue. I have never lost my faith in him solving this issue. And I don't want to lose my faith in him. If I had lost [my faith], I wouldn't be here.”

Where is the up-date of that meeting?

This is excellent news. Leyla Zana is respected by many people and she took a brave step for peace. Ultimately of course it is the PKK which needs to be convinced, which is the difficult part. But, Leyla Zana has the support of many Kurds and she could play an important role in the peace process.

zynell, Ahmet Kaya was a terrorist propagandist. No, Turk does not equal Kurd. Your statement would only be true if the kurds pulled their weight in building this republic which they most certainly have NOT done. There were NO kurds who helped in the War of Independence. http://www.turksolu.org/...

...remember the spirit when Ahmet Kaya sang a song in public for Erdogan heading to jail...KURD = TURK, TURK=KURD...imagine Said Nursi is the root for the Gülen movement...or what would be modern Turkey without the Kurds in the days of war of independence...

Ms Zana is right of course! Mr Erdogan CAN solve the issue and put an end to the senseless bloodshed by ensuring freedom, equality and equal opportunity for all citizens. The question is: Does he have the will to do it? Do his cronies benefit from the ongoing conflict?
