TRT Şeş to begin broadcasts in Sorani

19 June 2012 /TODAY'S ZAMAN
The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) will begin broadcasts in the Kurdish dialect of Sorani -- the official language of the northern Iraqi administration -- on the Kurdish-language channel TRT Şeş on Wednesday.

Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç and Massoud Barzani, the president of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) of northern Iraq, will participate in a live broadcast on the channel to mark the start of broadcasts in Sorani.

Sorani is also widely spoken in Urmia, a region of Iran. It is estimated that approximately 5 million Kurds around the world speak Sorani.

Developments in the Kurdish region of Iraq will be delivered in a news bulletin in Sorani on the channel for 45 minutes every day.

For over three years, TRT Şeş has been broadcasting in other Kurdish dialects such as Kurmanji and Zaza.

TRT Şeş Coordinator Fethullah Kırşan said the daily broadcasts in Sorani will start at 4 p.m.

“TRT Şeş is one of the most popular channels in northern Iraq. There is a lot of interest in its broadcasts. Over the past few years, relations between the region and Turkey have improved. We would like to continue this process [of dialogue] and establish a new bridge,” Kırşan said.

There are also plans to open a TRT Şeş office in Arbil.
