Parliamentary sub-committee visits Silivri Prison

11 June 2012 /TODAY'S ZAMAN
Seven deputies who are members of the sub-committee of the parliamentary Human Rights Investigation Commission visited Silivri Prison on Monday, where nearly all of the suspects who are currently on trial for attempted coups and related charges are being held.

The delegation was at Silivri Prison to examine the conditions of the detention facility. Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Çorum deputy Murat Yıldırım is the chairman of the commission. Sources said the sub-committee members met with several suspects, including former Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ as well as Republican People's Party (CHP) deputies Mustafa Balbay and Mehmet Haberal.

Most of the suspects in the prison are defendants in the ongoing trial regarding Ergenekon, a clandestine network charged with plotting to overthrow the AK Party government, and the Sledgehammer case, where the suspects are accused of being part of a clique inside the military that devised a plot to overthrow the government. The two cases are separate but related.
