EU chief: Gas find could help reunify Cyprus

28 May 2012 /AP
The European Union's president says a recent gas find off the coast of Cyprus can offer strong incentive to reunify the ethnically split island.

Herman Van Rompuy told Greek Cypriot lawmakers on Monday that sharing the natural resource could pave the way to peace, just as coal and steel cooperation between former rivals France and Germany spawned the European Union.

Cyprus was split in 1974 when Turkey intervened after a coup by supporters of union with Greece. Long-running peace talks between Greek Cypriots in the island's internationally recognized south and Turkish Cypriots in the north have ground to a standstill.
