‘New CHP’ finally finds its spokesmen

15 May 2012 /TAHA KIVANÇ
We live in a period in which the political map of Europe is being reshaped. French President Nicolas Sarkozy is gone. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron are obviously experiencing their last days in power.

However, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in Turkey and our prime minister are every day gaining more and more power. The main reason for that is the fact that although it has renewed its shop window [specifically, its İstanbul provincial head], the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) remains the same old failing CHP. It is slowly adopting the mindset of the CHP in the pre-1950s single-party period. And that is why, when Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the AK Party target the single-party period under İsmet İnönü, who led the party at the time, the CHP of today takes offense.
