The resolution, the outcome of concerted efforts by an international coalition of NGOs at the UN CPD meeting held on April 23-27, affirms young people's right to decide on all matters related to their sexuality; access to sexual and reproductive health services; and right to comprehensive sex education; plus the protection and promotion of their right to experience sexuality free from violence, discrimination and coercion.
A member of the South African delegation underlined the importance of removing obstacles to the health, well-being and development of young people and ensuring their human rights to autonomous decision-making regarding their bodies, health and sexual relationships.
UN CPD Chairperson Ambassador Hasan Kleib called on member states to realize these agreements back home at the national level.
The UN CPD adopted its monumental resolution on the cusp of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) report released last week that draws attention to the challenges the largest-ever generation of young people face today, including HIV/AIDS, violence and unintended pregnancy.
