Governor issues warning for May 1 celebrations in Taksim

26 April 2012 /TODAYSZAMAN.COM
Speaking to the press at a project introduction meeting on Thursday, İstanbul Governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu stated that if participants at this year's May Day celebrations cause any trouble in Taksim Square, another celebration in Taksim next year will not be allowed.

Taksim Square carries symbolic importance for May Day, also known as Labor Day, celebrations. On May 1, 1977, 34 people were killed during a gathering in the square when shots were fired into the crowd from a nearby building leading to an intervention by security forces and armored vehicles. Most of the casualties resulted from the panic among hundreds of thousands of participants caused by the intervention.
