Police detains seven in operations against PKK youth branch

23 April 2012 /TODAY'S ZAMAN
Seven people were taken into custody on Monday morning in an operation conducted against the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) youth branch in Yüksekova, a district in the southeastern province of Hakkari.

Hakkari Police Department counterterrorism units simultaneously raided several locations. Seven people were detained for alleged links to the terrorist organization's youth branch, which organizes illegal demonstrations, with participants often attacking security units and civilians with Molotov cocktails and rocks. The suspects were reportedly sent to the Hakkari Police Department to be interrogated.

The PKK, which is fighting for autonomy in Turkey's mainly Kurdish Southeast, was founded on Marxist ideology. Turkey has been conducting airstrikes on PKK camps in Iraq's northern mountains and inside Turkey since August of last year, following an increase in attacks on Turkish troops and civilians by the PKK, which has been fighting for autonomy for the Southeast since 1984.

The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives. The group is labeled a terrorist organization by the European Union and the United States, which has supplied Predator drones to assist Turkey.

COMMENTS
GeneralSherman, you are a liar and hypocrite. In some of your comments you speak about Kurds and in other comments you deny their existence, each time quoting the same phrases that already have been proved false. You are just a person most probably seating outside Turkey, with no relation to reality...

Can Kardar, you are delusional. These are terrorists and they will be treated like terrorists. Be thankful we don't treat them the way the US treats the poor people they deem "terrorists". The "kurdish" ethnic group and kurdish nationalism are the inventions of 19th century european imperialists....

Turkey still applies the same politics towards unwanted people. It doesn't matter if one is Kurdish or Turkish. If you are a Kurd who demonstrates at an illegal demonstration or if you are journalist who tells the truth the government automatically solves the situation by accusing you of being membe...
