The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC), which is working towards establishing greater economic ties with the Muslim states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has become a source of intimidation among Greek Cypriots, experts say.

Uğur Özgöker, a Turkish Cypriot professor at İstanbul’s Arel University who focuses on the issues of the island, spoke to Sunday’s Zaman and noted that the aim of Greek Cyprus is to impose an economic blockade on the KKTC to prevent its development because the KKTC becoming more economically independent through trade and investment relations would pave the way for international recognition of it as a country.

“Even the possibility of other countries beginning to recognize the KKTC, even as a de-facto state, keeps them from their sleep,” Özgöker said. He said the KKTC is already attracting a high volume of investments from Israel and Russia and currently has commercial attaché offices operating through Turkish embassies in such countries as Azerbaijan, the US, Belgium, Kuwait, Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

The interest of Muslim states in the KKTC has increased as Turkey’s influence in the entire Muslim region continues to grow. Recently, KKTC President Derviş Eroğlu was invited by the OIC to their headquarters in Saudi Arabia. Eroğlu, the first KKTC president to be hosted by the Saudis and the OIC, expressed to media after the meeting that “seeing the interest and support of the OIC, the Islamic Development Bank and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was very important and satisfying.”

The Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB) and the Islamic Development Bank also organized a high-profile trip to attend the Northern Cyprus Investment Forum on April 12 with over 150 businessmen from Islamic countries to promote investment opportunities there.

In comments to Sunday’s Zaman, Sibel Akgün, an assistant professor of international relations at Sakarya University, highlighted three main reasons for the interest of Muslim countries in the KKTC. The most important reason she listed is Turkey’s powerful influence in the region, because whenever Turkey becomes strong, Muslim countries seek opportunities to support Turkey, similar to the time when Turgut Özal was president. Secondly, the island has always held great importance for Muslims because of the Mosque of Umm Haram, where the shrine of the Prophet Mohammed’s wet nurse, Umm Haram, is located. It is considered one of the holiest places by Muslims. Akgün listed as the third reason the cooperation between Israel and Greek Cyprus in gas and oil exploration activities off the coast of the island. She said: “With strong support of the KKTC by Muslim states, Israel will be cornered in the Mediterranean.” Also speaking to Sunday’s Zaman, KKTC Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Ali Çıralı explained that as Turkey’s prestige and role in the world rises, many countries, including Islamic countries, are looking to build warm relations with the KKTC. “The close partnership of Israel and Greek Cyprus could be having a slight effect on the change in their approach, but it’s mainly due to Turkey’s role. Muslim countries now accept the KKTC as one of them and are trying to establish economic ties,” he stated.

Mesut Çevikalp of Aksiyon Magazine, who has been reporting on the issues of the island for past 10 years, told Sunday’s Zaman that the Greek Cypriots have been establishing lobbies around the world in countries that have problems with Turkey, and it is only natural for the KKTC to try to establish ties with Muslim countries to promote its own rights. The OIC and the KKTC are working to use economic relations to build a bridge between themselves.

He noted that the KKTC has great potential for agriculture and already sells such products to many countries via Turkey. “With the construction of pipelines to be completed by 2014 that will bring water to the KKTC from Turkey, the agricultural sector is expected to flourish,” he said. He also mentioned that currently there are major investments by Israel and Russia in the KKTC and the time will come when they will have to recognize the KKTC as a state or a de facto state in order to protect the commercial rights of their citizens in the country. “Trade with as many countries as possible and even the addition of new flights to the KKTC would lessen the burden of the economic embargo imposed by many countries that do not recognize the KKTC as a state,” he commented.

@ LEVENT ......In 1963, inter-communal violence broke out, sponsored by both motherlands. As a result, Turkish Cypriots were forced into enclaves and Cypriot President Archbishop Makarios III called for unilateral constitutional changes as a means to ease tensions over the whole island. The United N...

Parallel ?Universe Under some more ?normal? circumstances, let us say in a Universe parallel to ours, the ?Turkish-Cypriots? for short T/c (a term invented by the English colonialists) would be citizens of the Hellenic state and their religion would be Islam; A Hellenic State that would include Gree...

The article makes two contradictory claims about Israel (and Russia). The first is "that currently there are major investments by Israel and Russia in the KKTC and the time will come when they will have to recognize the KKTC as a state or a de facto state in order to protect the commercial rights of...

@Levent - you write utter rubbish. In actual fact if you read any of the comments on this site from Greeks and GC's they mostly state fact and the legal side of the Cyprus problem. Sadly most Turkish posters, but not all, thankfully, actually write nationalist propaganda with very little fact and ...

@Mark, now you know what it feels like being picked on for who you are! I have never come across a comment by you highlighting the racist venom spilled on this respectful news site by parasite racist Greeks or is it OK to hate Turks in the Greek custom! Go to a Greek Church listen to the priest spea...
LEVENT
@Simplesimon, where was you in 1963 when, three years after the "unified" Cyprus Republic was formed, before the ink was dry on signatures, the Greek Cypriot forces of Macarios tore-up the constitution and attacked, killed and made refugees of Turkish Cypriots and then he flew to the UN HQ begging ...

@Paul............I do not think the Greeks are so important as you put it.Where required I have been critical about the Greeks as a regular contributor. The issue at hand is the fact that a sovereign nation (Cyprus) was invaded and is occupied by another nation. Leaving Greeks aside, what other nat...

Christoph, you sound like a broken record you keep repeating the same trash. Please change your story and maybe it might be worth reading for once.

@LEVENT - are you some kind of idiot? How many Turks and Turkish Cypriots have emigrated to Australia? Should the Aborigines ask for their land back from them too? How ignorant can you be? Your posts have no basis in fact, and are nothing more than rants from a crazed individual who sees nothing...

@Paul Nothing is impossible, anyhow what gives you the impression that Greeks are so important and they must be the only exciting community in Cyprus. The problem with you Greeks, you are too blind to see that you really are not considered as important as you think you are. A nation with a declining...
LEVENT
@Simplesimon, your comment was a nice fairytale story but the native Australians the Aborigenies stand a better chance of getting there land back from the million Greek settlers in Australia than northern Cyprus going under Greek Cypriot control. The sun will always shine in the TRNC while under Tur...
LEVENT
@Paul, for a reunification you need two willing parties. As we have seen since 2004, the Greek Cypriot side is not willing to proceed, and the situation on the Turkish side got worse after the defeat of Talat. So, logic that Turkish side looks for alternatives.

The Greek Cypriots can stick there Republic where the sun dont shine. For years they have lied to the international community that they are the only people of Cyprus. If it wasn't for Turkey the Turkish Cypriots would only excist in history books. UNITED CYPRUS what a load of rubbish! The Greek Cypr...

ROC is focussing on assuming the EU Presidency in 2 months, not on the continual efforts of 'kktc' to be recognized by even the most humble of nations in the OIC. Turkey continues to try and legitimize it's ethnic cleansing and property theft on Cyprus. News to Ankara-it's not going to happen.
Christoph
Why does Zaman refer to the only legal government of Cyprus as "Greek Cyprus"? There is no "Greek Cyprus" and no "Turkish Cyprus" and there is no such thing as the so called "TRNC". The north is occupied territory where 80% of it's original Christian population has been driven from their homes. Th...

Okay, so Turkey keeps telling the world they are extending efforts to reunify Cyprus, and we all remeber Erdogan's promise to "stay a step ahead of the ROC" in effort to reunite the island... and there's even an article in Zaman from yesterday that posits how the ROC's newfound mineral wealth could...
