10 April 2012 /TODAY'S ZAMAN
A retired colonel who was released on bail pending trial as part of the Sledgehammer attempted coup investigation was found dead in his office in the capital on Monday night.

Retired Col. Tarık Akça was found dead in his office on Fevzi Çakmak Street on Monday night when area residents called the police after hearing gunshots at the office.

Akça, a retired air force commander, was 50. His body was taken to the Council of Forensic Medicine for a post-mortem examination. Police have launched an investigation into his death.

Sledgehammer is a suspected coup plan devised at a military gathering in 2003 that allegedly sought to undermine the government in order to lay the groundwork for a coup d'état.
