Disabled people excited ahead of first-ever state personnel exam

9 April 2012 /ERHAN ÇAÇAN
As two weeks are left before the first-ever state personnel examination for the disabled, called Özürlü Memur Seçme Sınavı, candidates are excited for the opportunity and are working hard to earn a position in a public institution.

İstanbul's Zeytinburnu Municipality has opened free courses for the disabled to prepare for the exam, scheduled for April 29. Cem Yurt, who is unable to walk, told Today's Zaman that he is excited to take this examination in its first year. But he has reservations concerning what is going to happen once the disabled are employed in public institutions. “We want the authorities to make public buildings disabled-friendly,” he said.

Ali Veysel is hearing impaired and as such is eligible to work at government agencies which implement employment quotas for people with disabilities. The disabled will get different tests according to their degree of disability. In some cases it is difficult to document the history of the disability due to the lack of documenting institutions in smaller provinces. This is true for Veysel. While expressing his excitement about the opportunity, he said he could still take an easier test if he could document that he was born with his disability.
