Lend a leg, stand with landmine survivors

THOSE WHO WISH TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR SOLIDARITY WITH LANDMINE VICTIMS CAN ROLL UP A PANT OR SHIRT SLEEVE AND ATTACH THE CAMPAIGN LOGO PICTURED HERE.

The Colombian Embassy in Turkey is organizing the “Lend Your Leg” campaign on April 4 as a symbolic gesture of solidarity with landmine survivors.

Colombia ranks second worldwide in the number of landmine victims. According to the Presidential Program for Comprehensive Action against Landmines, 229 people in Colombia alone and a total of 3,956 people across the globe were victims of this scourge in 2011.

As part of the campaign, the Embassy of Colombia in Ankara asks those who wish to demonstrate their solidarity with landmine victims to roll up a pant or shirt sleeve and attach the campaign logo pictured here. They should then e-mail a photo of their personalized symbolic gesture to alejandra.jurado@cancilleria.gov.co before April 4. A video of the collected photos will be shared via social media and the campaign website www.lendyourleg.org

The General Assembly of the United Nations declared April 4 as International Landmine Awareness Day in order to create public awareness of the danger they represent.

As a part of the worldwide “Lend Your Leg” initiative, 9,133 shoes were placed in the main square of Bogota last year to honor the victims of landmines and their families. The campaign became viral via social media and garnered support from celebrities, NGOs and government officials all over the world, including Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.

The “Lend Your Leg” campaign was launched in Geneva on March 1, 2011.
