Ottoman ship Çekevele to be displayed in Alanya

15 September 2011 /MELIK EVREN
The well-preserved frame of the Ottoman vessel Çekevele was moved to an Alanya shipyard this week as part of a project sponsored by the Alanya Maritime and Seafaring Museum.

The ship, recently recovered from the seafloor, is believed to have been used as a supply ship by the Ottomans in the 16th century. The hull of the vessel measures 14.95 meters in length and 4.9 meters in width and was likely constructed at a shipyard in Urla, according to the museum director, Seher Türkmen.

The ship arrived in Alanya on Wednesday, when Mayor Hasan Sipahioğlu conveyed his personal excitement to a crowd gathered at the entrance of the museum. “We're doing this in order to lay claim to our history. Alanya has distinguished itself through this project," Sipahioğlu declared.
