Don’t neglect bowel problems

13 February 2011 /TÜRKAN UYMAZ
Bowel problems related to unknown causes can be frustrating and increasing amounts of pain can be absolutely irritating. In medicine, this condition is known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

While anyone can experience this syndrome, it is most common among people between 35 and 50 years old. IBS is an intestinal disorder that can be dangerous to our health. It is generally a long-term health condition. Symptoms of IBS include abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea, bloating, gas, the feeling that you have not finished a bowel movement, a frequent need to urinate, fatigue, back pain and shortness of breath. But all of these symptoms vary from one person to the next. Experts say there is no treatment for the disorder and stress that people who are diagnosed with IBS must go to the doctor for check ups. IBS is especially seen in middle-aged people. Since the disorder concerns the digestive system, it's very important that you watch what you eat.

Prebiotic yogurt can help fight of some of your problems

About 40 percent of patients with IBS are between 35 and 50 years of age. The symptoms of IBS decrease as the average age increases. According to dietician Taylan Kümeli, it's important to change eating habits to ease or prevent symptoms, regardless of what the cause of the condition is. Consuming prebiotic yogurt regularly can be very helpful. The good bacteria in the yogurt boost the body's immune system. Kümeli recommends patients eat a bowl of prebiotic yogurt each day. Kümeli also gave us some recommendations for relieving intestinal problems without medication.

Tips to treat IBS symptoms:

Eat small portions frequently: Increase the number of meals you eat a day, but keep your portions small. Eating a large meal at once can put pressure on your digestive system. Dinner should be your lightest meal.

Do not skip meals: Eating regularly will keep your intestines functioning properly. Therefore, be careful not to skip a meal.

Consume foods rich in pulp: Consume foods that are rich in pulp or fiber as they can help relieve intestinal problems.

Avoid foods that cause gas or an upset stomach: Do not consume a lot of gassy foods like dry beans, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and peas. If there are foods that upset your stomach you should avoid them or cut down on them.

Drink 2 to 2.5 liters of water a day: Water is one of the most important factors in preventing intestinal problems, especially constipation.

Drink peppermint tea, chamomile tea and fennel tea: These teas are believed to be effective against indigestion, bloating and gas.

Walk: Exercising regularly can help reduce the symptoms of IBS. Walking for at least 30 minutes every day will be very helpful.

Avoid smoking and alcohol: Nicotine and alcohol have a negative effect on bowel movements.

Avoid the following foods as much as possible: White bread, white pasta, cookies, cakes, pastries, corn, oats, cheese, milk, eggs, tea, carbonated drinks, chocolate, sugary foods, fermented foods, sugary fruit juices and very spicy foods.
