Lions on the verge of parting ways with Song and Ilic
Galatasaray’s Rigobert Song.
With only five weeks remaining to the end of the 2006-07 Turkcell Super League season, the Galatasaray foreign player crisis has taken a turn for the worse.

While Cameroon international defender Rigobert Song had a heated argument with coach Eric Gerets during the away game at Gaziantep earlier in the league’s second half, Sasha Ilic, who was red-carded in the Kayseri Erciyes game, got his share of the backlash from club Vice-Chairman Adnan Polat.

Song, known for his hard tackles, is -- along with Zinedine Zidane -- the only player to have been sent off in two different World Cups, however Ilic made an excellent start to the season by scoring five goals in four Turkish Premier Super League matches.

As the tension caused by these incidents was still simmering, it has been reported that Croatian defender Stjepan Tomas had an argument with Polat as well. What reportedly angered Polat was Tomas -- one of the most consistent players on the Galatasaray squad -- meeting with Celaletting Bilgiç, a soccer agent known for his close ties with Fenerbahçe.

Polat, who was at the same cafe as the two when the meeting took place, asked Tomas to leave the table where he was talking to Bilgiç. The Croatian player, petrified by the vice chairman’s reaction, reportedly left the cafe immediately. There are rumors that the Galatasaray administration is planning to cut Tomas’ salary and that the 29-year-old midfielder has told his close friends he was fed up and planning to jump ship, if necessary.
