On this day, the autonomous community of Galicia in Spain celebrates its national holiday. Galicia, or Galiza, located in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula, became an autonomous Spanish community in 1981.

Today is Commonwealth Constitution Day in Puerto Rico, commemorating the anniversary of the day in 1952 when Puerto Rico became a commonwealth with the proclamation of their constitution.

Today is Tunisia’s Republic Day, a holiday commemorating the declaration of the republic in 1957. Habib Ben Ali Bourguiba was the first president of the Republic of Tunisia from July 25, 1957 to Nov. 7, 1987. He is often compared to Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk because of the pro-Western reforms enacted during his presidency.

Today is also Guanacaste Day in Costa Rica. This national holiday commemorates the 1814 transfer of the region of Guanacaste from Nicaragua to Costa Rica by Spain.

Today is Khordad Sal, the birthday of Zoroastrianism’s Prophet Zarathushtra, according to the Qadimi calendar. The date and place of Zarathushtra’s birth are uncertain; however, it seems likely that he lived between 628 and 551 B.C. It is a day of rejoicing, when Zoroastrians and Parsis go to fire temples to pay homage and offer prayers.

Today is also the feast day of St. James. St. James (d. 44), son of Zebedee, was one of the disciples of Jesus. His remains are said to be buried in the Spanish town of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, which is considered the third most holy town of Catholicism (after Jerusalem and Rome). St. James is the patron saint of Spain and his banner was a symbol of the Reconquista.

The annual Ebernoe Horn Fair is held on this day in the small Sussex village of Ebernoe, about five miles north of Petworth. The tradition is centuries old, though it appears to have been revived in 1864 after a long lapse. The celebration is held on the village common and the main attraction is a cricket match between Ebernoe and a nearby village.
