Today is the anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), the 35th president of the United States, who served from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. The president was killed by a sniper in the US city of Dallas, Texas. The assassin was identified as Lee Harvey Oswald, who never confessed to his role in the assassination and who was killed by Jack Ruby on live television before he could be brought to trial for the crimes.

Today is the anniversary of the birth of Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle (1890-1970). De Gaulle served as the president of France from December 1958 until his resignation in April 1969. De Gaulle was a military leader during World War II, and he became the leader of the French government-in-exile during the German occupation of France. De Gaulle had France adopt a new Constitution, marking the beginning of the French Fifth Republic. His political ideology is known as Gaullism, and it has been a major influence on subsequent French politics.

The World Peace Council awarded Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet the International Peace Award on this day in 1950. Other recipients of the award that year were Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, Chilean writer and communist politician Pablo Neruda, American actor and civil rights activist Paul Robeson and Polish film director Wanda Jakubowska. The World Peace Council was formed in 1949 to promote peaceful coexistence and nuclear disarmament. Since its very beginning it has been accused of being a front organization for communist parties due to its advocacy of unilateral disarmament in Western countries.

Today is the anniversary of the granting of observer status to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) by the UN in 1974. This status confirmed that the PLO was the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
