Today is the anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), the 35th president of the United States, who served from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. The president was killed by a sniper in the US city of Dallas, Texas. The assassin was identified as Lee Harvey Oswald, who never confessed to his role in the assassination and who was killed by Jack Ruby on live television before he could be brought to trial for the crimes.
Today is the anniversary of the birth of Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle (1890-1970). De Gaulle served as the president of France from December 1958 until his resignation in April 1969. De Gaulle was a military leader during World War II, and he became the leader of the French government-in-exile during the German occupation of France. De Gaulle had France adopt a new Constitution, marking the beginning of the French Fifth Republic. His political ideology is known as Gaullism, and it has been a major influence on subsequent French politics.
